All About Garage Door Openers View Opener Gallery

There are several factors to take into consideration when shopping for new garage doors and openers; noise, power, price, security, installation, service and warranty. You will have to compare these features among the available brands and models to determine which combination will best suit your needs. You will also have to determine whether you will opt for professional garage door opener installation or a do-it-yourself approach to garage door opener repairs.

There are some absolute necessities when it comes to garage door openers that you must make sure your choice includes. Since 1993 it has been a federal law that all automatic garage door openers include sensors that will keep the garage door from coming down on people or objects that are underneath the door. If your garage door opener is old enough that it does not have this feature, replacement is recommended. You should test this safety feature regularly to make sure it is operating properly. All keypads, controls and remotes should be located where they are inaccessible to children.
There are 4 types of garage door openers designated by the mechanics that do the actual lifting of the door.

  • Chain drive – This is the most common garage door opener and the most popular option. It is less expensive than the others. However, it is also the noisiest opener. It can be purchased in models with a ½ hp or a ¾ hp motor. The larger the motor the more expensive it will be. The chain drive is appropriate for single or double sets of garage doors. Offered by liftmaster garage door openers and genie garage door openers as well as Craftsman openers.
  • Screw drive – This option falls in the mid-range for price and noise. The door moves up or down via a threaded steel rod. . It also has fewer moving parts that the other choices and requires practically no maintenance. They are not as common as chain drive openers and are generally powered by a ½ hp motor. Offered by Craftsman, liftmaster & genie garage door openers.
  • Torsion idrive – This is a new option in garage openers and is not widely available. It lifts the door via a counterbalance system of torsion springs that does not require tracks or motors. With this option the open door is much closer to the ceiling when raised and so allows more clearance for taller vehicles. This is a much quieter system than the previous choices.
  • Belt drive – This is by far the quietest and also the most expensive choice in garage openers. It replaces the chain drive with a rubber belt that is reinforced with metal. Offered by Craftsman, liftmaster & genie garage door openers.

Once you have chosen the new garage opener system that you prefer, there are still some options to be considered, namely the entry system. You can choose remotes, keypads, keyless, finger swipes or push buttons. There are also updates available that allow you to upgrade the door security while still using your rolling code opener. A garage door monitor is also a great security accessory, letting you know when the door opens and closes, and whether or not the door has closed all the way. You may also choose to install a soundproofing kit which is designed to prevent the door’s vibration from penetrating into any room that may be located above the garage. Garage door openers are not quite so simple anymore!
